Mission

The mission of the Mathematics Department is to provide an environment where students can learn and appreciate mathematics; while they are challenged to become independent learners, critical thinkers and effective problem solvers.

Overview

The teachers in the Mathematics Department are dedicated to provide Mathematics Education of the highest quality to their students. All students are catered for through the use of differentiated instructions. Because of these hardworking and dedicated teachers, we have seen a gradual increase in the CSEC Mathematics passes. For CSEC 2020 approximately 55% of our students passed the Mathematics exam. The sixth form students also sat Integrated Mathematics exam for the first time this year, which resulted in a 50% pass.

Activities Within Our Department

Regional Competition

Over the years the department trained students to participate in a number of Regional Math Competition as well as the Grade 9 Mathematics Problem Solving Competition hosted by The University of the West Indies. In 2016 our students placed eight in the Problem Solving Competition . In 2018 our students won the same competition and was placed second in the following year.


Outstanding Performance

Motivation is important to the teaching and learning process; therefore as a form of motivation, students who score 80% and above in the department monthly assessments are given certificate of recognition. In addition the photo of students with the overall highest score for each grade is place on our mathematics board. The department also conducts regular inter-grade math quizzes with the finals against shift played on our Annual Mathematics Day and winners awarded with trophies.
